The CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS)

The CGIAR Research Program Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) seeks to promote a food-secure world through the provision of science-based efforts that support sustainable agriculture and enhance livelihoods while adapting to climate change and conserving natural resources and environmental services.

No single research institution alone can address these critically important issues. CCAFS addresses the increasing challenge of global warming and declining food security on agricultural practices, through strategic collaboration between the CGIAR and the ESSP. Led by the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT), CCAFS is collaborating with all 15 CGIAR Centers, the CGIAR Research Programs and a wide range of partners. The Coordinating Unit is located in Copenhagen, Denmark.

CCAFS brings together the world's best researchers in agricultural science, development research, climate science, and earth system science to identify and address the most important interactions, synergies and tradeoffs between climate change, agriculture and food security. CCAFS also involves farmers, policy makers, donors and other stakeholders, and integrates their knowledge and needs into the tools and approaches that are developed.

CCAFS program objectives are to:

• Identify and test pro-poor adaptation and mitigation practices, technologies and policies for food systems, adaptive capacity and rural livelihoods.
• Provide diagnosis and analysis that will ensure the inclusion of agricultural in climate change policies, and the inclusion of climate issues in agricultural policies, from the sub-national to the global level in a way that brings benefits to the rural poor.

Research Themes and Areas

CCAFS is structured around four closely interlinked global themes, currently working in three regions - West Africa, East Africa and South Asia - on:

Theme 1: Adaptation to progressive climate change

Theme 2: Adaptation through managing climate risk

Theme 3: Pro-poor climate change mitigation

Theme 4: Integration for decision making

In 2012 CCAFS will expand its work into South East Asia and Latin America.
