The CGIAR Challenge Program "Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security" (CCAFS) is a major collaborative endeavour between the Consultative Group on International Agriculture Research (CGIAR) and their partners, and the Earth System Science Partnership (ESSP).  It is aimed at overcoming the additional threats posed by a changing climate to achieving food security, enhancing livelihoods and improving environmental management in the developing world.  The main objectives are to:

  • Overcome critical gaps in knowledge of how to enhance - and manage the tradeoffs between - food security, livelihood and environmental goals in the face of a changing climate.
  • Develop and evaluate options for adapting to a changing climate to inform agricultural development, food security policy and donor investment strategies.
  • Assist farmers, policy makers, researchers and donors to continually monitor, assess and adjust their actions in response to a changing climate.

Professor Thomas Rosswall is Chair of CCAFS.  Professor Rosswall is a microbial ecologist and ecosystem scientist with extensive research experience in agriculture and climate change.  He has had substantial experience in launching and leading many complex, collaborative international research endeavours.

Professor Rosswall has worked with the Chairs of the Alliance Executive and the ESSP Science Committee to establish the CCAFS Steering Committee and Dr Bruce Campbell has been appointed as CCAFS Director.  The Secretariat has been established in the University of Copenhagen.

The CCAFS Secretariat was launched in Copenhagen in October 2009, click here to see press release. CCAFS is now supported by the European Union, the World Bank, and the governments of Canada and Denmark.

CCAFS played a major role in the Agriculture and Rural Development Day at COP15.
