Scientific Committee

The Scientific Committee (SC) is the governing body of the ESSP. The SC provides scientific guidance on all aspects of the work of the Partnership. It develops and prioritizes specific plans for the ESSP of a scientific as well as a strategic nature, guides their implementation and publicises their results. The SC promotes the coordination of regional and international activities of the Partnership and facilitates cooperation with related international organisations, both governmental and non-governmental.

Chair

Professor Rik Leemans, Chair of the ESSP Scientific Committee, is head of the Environmental Systems Analysis group at Wageningen University in the Netherlands. Rik leads multidisciplinary projects to develop integrated assessment models for global biodiversity and local/regional ecosystem vulnerability. He co-chaired the Response Option working group of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment and has been strongly involved in all of the assessments of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) over the past decade.

 

Members

The Scientific Committee is composed of International Council for Science (ICSU) appointed members (including the chair), GEC research programmes (DIVERSITAS, IGBP, IHDP, WCRP) chairs and directors, an ICSU representative and representatives of each joint project, integrated regional study, CCAFS and START.
